Key Insect Orders and Life Cycles: Ametabolus Orders

Ametabolus, or “no metamorphosis” orders represent a small number of insect orders in whichthere is very little change during development.

  • Larvae hatch from eggs with their full compliment of body segments
  • Larvae resemble adults but are smaller
  • Adults are wingless and continue to molt after maturity
  • Examples: springtails, firebrats and silverfish
