Insect Classification
- Animals are grouped or classified according to similar characteristics, such as the number of body regions, presence of wings, number and type of legs, etc.
- Phylum Arthropoda includes animals with segmented bodies, exoskeletons and jointed legs.
- This broad group includes insects, spiders, shrimp, lobster, millipedes, centipedes, etc.
- Class Insecta includes animals that have 3 body regions, one pair of antennae and a thorax with 3 pairs of legs and two pairs of wings.
- Insecta is further divided into more than 30 orders which define the basic insect types.
